Definition of Report

A report is an impersonal presentation of facts. The main purpose of writing a report is to present some important information impersonally. It performs many functions; analyzing facts, informing and recommending suggestions, helping making decisions and so on. 
 
Business executives can't give much attention to any particular problem or issue. So, they are to depend on business report.

Managers take important decision on the basis of the recommendations of the report. Reports help in conducting routine functions of the organization.

Lower level officers or branch upper executive send reports about daily, weekly or monthly description of working progress to the upper level of the organization. or head office.

So, it is the most important form of communication in the business world. That's why it should be prepared very carefully. 
 
Information presented in the report must be accurate and clear. The reporter should prepare it impersonally. The wording of report should be simple and concise. As a result, It will be able to serve many business problems. 

The word "Report" probably originated from the Latin word "Reportare". Here, "Re" means "back" and "portare" means carrying something back. 
 
In a general sense, report is an impersonal presentation of facts. A report is a communication from someone who has some organized information to someone who wants to use that information. It is an orderly presentation of information that assists in decision making and problem solving process.
