Marketing is not an act of God; it is a result of gradually process. Marketing was improving with developing of humankind. 

The word ‘Marketing’ was first used in America in 1906-1911. Later the popularity and acceptance of marketing the increased continuously.


The historical development of marketing is explained briefly below.

1. The era of Self Sufficiency
At the first time of humankind, every human was self-sufficient. They itself produced their own need product. 

At that time, their necessary was limited. They had no any marketing product by fulfilling their own necessary. 

Therefore, then there was no need for marketing a product.

2. Era of Exchange
At one stage, there was seen that people made most of what they consumed. Then they decide to market their product. 

But at that time there was no money for the medium of exchange. So then Barter was a system of exchange that they chose. 

The barter system is goods or services are directly exchanged for other goods or services without using a medium of exchange. 

As a result, the era of exchange is started and borne the marketing.

3. Era of Production
The production era is called until 1860-1920. This era was normally focused on production. 

The production era is named so like that because the main priority of companies was a lot of production and by big production reducing of the cost. 

Companies think that exchanges could be facilitated by lowering their manufacturing costs. Thus they pass their product to customers at lower prices.

4. Era of Sale
This is another important era of marketing. The era of marketing holds promoting of their product for more selling and they produce more. 

From the start of the twentieth century in 1920 and till 1950 is the main time of starting the era of selling. 

This time the competition in companies grew and the focus of marketing turned to sell. This time communications, advertising, and branding started to become more important as companies needed to sell the increasing outputs of production in an increasing growing market for the stronger competition. 

Nowadays most firms also practice the selling concept. The main thing in this concept, the aim is to sell what they make rather than make what the market wants.

5. Era of Marketing
The era of marketing is started in 1950

From this time the needs of consumers are becoming increasing and consumers are becoming more aware. In this situation, the marketer brings change in their marketing policy and strategy. It holds the key to achieving organizational goals of the selling company. 

It helps to business organization to be more effective than competitors in creating, delivering and communicating with selected target customers. 

The marketing concept rests on four pillars that are target market, customer needs, integrated marketing, and profitability.

6. Social Marketing Era
This social marketing era is started in 1970. In this stage, the social marketing was a marketing system that first thinks about the company’s profit and then it considers consumer’s want, needs and the good well of society. 

The marketing organizations always try to produce the product that should be good and well for society and the environment. 

In this time the companies are given more importance to consider the environment, low and societies well.

7. Relationship Marketing Era
The relationship marketing era is started in 1990

In this aged, there was focused on group mass advertising and a new way of understanding between marketers and customers. 

The main things of making successful customer-brand relationship are communication, sharing and building trust for making the real relationship with customers. 

At that time the marketers have to first look deeply into their inner self for making good relationship with customers. If they can know about everything about them then the can create a good product or service to succeed.

8. Mobile Marketing or Social Networking Era
At the present is the mobile or social networking era. This era was started in 2010

Now mobile is the future of marketing, but really the era of mobile has already arrived now. If you’re not implementing a mobile marketing strategy in your business, you’re some steps of behind!

Social networking is another important marketing activity. The notable social networking sites are Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Yahoo, Google Plus etc.

In conclusion, the historical development of marketing has entered from the self-reliant, exchange and production era to relationship and social networking era at present.
